Ellison pledges $9.2B more Oracle stock for Warner Bros. bid
The move
An Oracle filing revealed Friday that Larry Ellison pledged 67 million more Oracle shares as collateral for personal loans, a 19% increase from a year earlier. His total pledge is now about 413 million shares, 36% of his 1.16 billion Oracle shares, worth roughly $9.2 billion more than last year at Oracle's Sept. 25 close of $137.10. Oracle bars other officers and directors from pledging shares this way but carves out an exception for Ellison. The borrowed money helps fund his family's commitment to son David Ellison's $111 billion bid for Warner Bros. Discovery through Paramount Skydance, which recently cleared lawsuits from state attorneys general and the Writers Guild of America.
Why it matters
The bigger the pledge, the bigger the risk if Oracle's stock drops sharply: lenders could force a sale of shares to cover the loans, adding selling pressure at the worst time.
The bear case
Ellison's pledged stake is still well under half his Oracle holdings, and the collateral pool is a small slice of his roughly $184 billion net worth, so a forced sale stays unlikely unless Oracle shares fall hard.
What to watch
Whether Paramount Skydance's $111 billion Warner Bros. Discovery bid closes without further legal challenges.
